Welcome to Devotions by the Sea, our brand-new devotional series where we take everyday elements of God’s creation and discover His truth in them.
In this Course:
EPISODE 1: Waves of the Sea | 20 Minutes
In this episode, Waves of the Sea, we dive into James 1:5-6, where Scripture reminds us that if we lack wisdom, we can ask God, who gives generously to all. Just like waves are not random splashes, but powerful forces of energy moving through the water—caused by wind, tides, and even storms—our faith is shaped by what moves us. God uses the imagery of waves to describe how people respond to faith: sometimes steady, sometimes tossed about. But wisdom is more than head knowledge. It’s not just facts—it’s God’s truth guiding our steps. He has a plan and purpose for each of us, and He longs for us to discover it. The question is: How do we find out what that plan is?

EPISODE 2: Mangroves of Hospitality | 12 Minutes
In Romans 12:13, we’re reminded: “Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” Just like mangroves standing strong together against the waves, we’re called to meet the needs of others—offering food, companionship, encouragement, or simply a listening ear. In this episode, we reflect on how true hospitality strengthens both the giver and the receiver, and how God designed us to hold each other up when the storms of life hit hardest.

EPISODE 3: Grasses on the Beach | 10 Minutes
Along the shoreline, washed-up turtle grass tells a quiet story of life, death, and renewal. Once vibrant and full of life beneath the waves, these blades nourished countless creatures, strengthened their environment, and played a vital role in sustaining life. But in time, they too faded, leaving only traces before disappearing into the cycle of creation. In this episode, we reflect on how turtle grass mirrors our own lives—our fleeting time on earth, the impact we leave behind, and God’s reminder through the prophet Isaiah that life is but a breath, yet deeply significant in His design.

EPISODE 4: Have You Considered the Coconut? | 20 Minutes
King David wrote in Psalm 19:1: “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.” Everywhere we look, creation points us back to the Creator. Even something as ordinary as a coconut tree along the shoreline can preach a powerful truth—God’s glory is on display. Yet throughout Scripture we see people who refused to acknowledge Him. Pharaoh hardened his heart against Moses. The Pharisees turned their hearts against Jesus. Hard-heartedness is closing ourselves off to God, even when His presence is all around us. When we look at the towering coconut tree, heavy with fruit, it stands as a reminder: God has surrounded us with evidence of His goodness and power. Nature itself testifies that He is real—and it calls us to keep our hearts open to Him.

EPISODE 5: Sands of the Seashore | 11 Minutes
There’s something peaceful about lying on warm sand or standing at the edge of the water as the waves lap at your feet. But if you’ve ever stood long enough, you’ve noticed how the sand shifts beneath you with each wave. It doesn’t take much for the foundation to give way. In this episode, we reflect on Jesus’ words in Matthew 7 about the wise man who built his house on the rock versus the foolish man who built on sand. Life offers many things that seem secure—money, possessions, even comfort—but they’re only temporary. Just like sand slipping away under your feet, these foundations cannot last. Join us as we explore what it means to build our lives on Christ, the solid rock, the only foundation that will stand firm when the storms come.

EPISODE 6: The Sea | 10 Minutes
The sea is both breathtaking and mysterious. From sapphire blues in the Caribbean to angry gray waves, it captivates our eyes and stirs our hearts. Throughout history, the sea has been both a blessing and a barrier—offering beauty, protection, and yet at times, destruction. In this episode, we reflect on the “seas” in our own lives—the impossible challenges that God sometimes places before us. Just as He led the Israelites safely through the Red Sea, He calls us to trust Him when the path makes no sense. Stand still, let Him lead, and watch Him make a way where there seems to be none.

EPISODE 7: God Sees You | 9 Minutes
Even in the depths of the sea, God is near. In this episode, Michaela shares a story from her most recent Marine Biology Trip — a time when she longed to dive beneath the waves but found herself confined to her wheelchair and struggling with discouragement. Yet, even there, on the surface of the ocean, God met her. Join Michael and Michaela as they reflect on how God sees us — in our pain, isolation, and frustration — and how He lovingly reminds us that we are never alone. Whether through nature, a gentle whisper, or the kindness of a friend, God’s presence is constant and personal.

EPISODE 8: Dive Buddies | 7 minutes
Life isn’t meant to be lived alone. Just like divers rely on their dive buddies to check in and keep them safe beneath the waves, we too need people who will walk beside us through life’s deep waters. In this episode, Michael Lane and Michaela Vorwerk talk about the importance of having — and being — a spiritual “dive buddy.” Are you checking in on your friends, lifting them up in prayer, and encouraging them to look for God’s hand in everyday moments? Join us as we explore how strong friendships and faith can help us navigate even the deepest trials.

EPISODE 9: The Shipwreck | 9 minutes
Life’s storms can leave us feeling wrecked—caught on the rocks of illness, broken relationships, financial hardship, or loss. It’s easy to wonder if these moments are God’s punishment, but Scripture shows us that even the most faithful followers face fierce winds. In this episode, Michael Lane reflects on the Apostle Paul’s shipwreck in Acts 27 and the trials that followed. Through Paul’s story, we see that hardship isn’t always a sign of God’s displeasure—it can be an opportunity for His power and glory to shine through us.

EPISODE 10: The Fear of God | 8 Minutes
The ocean’s beauty brings peace—but its power commands respect. In this episode, Michael and Michaela reflect on how God’s love and holiness mirror the sea: calm yet mighty, gentle yet awe-inspiring. To fear the Lord is not to be afraid, but to stand in reverence of the One who holds both mercy and power in His hands.

EPISODE 11: What Are You Anchored To? | 8 Minutes
Life’s waters can be unpredictable—calm one moment and stormy the next. The question is, what holds you steady? Some say the Bible is outdated, but like a ship’s anchor that never stops working, God’s Word still secures those who trust in Him. In this episode, we’ll explore what it means to anchor your life to Christ and find peace no matter how rough the seas become.

EPISODE 12: Seagulls | 10 Minutes
As seagulls soar over the waves and run along the shore, they live in a world that is both breathtaking and harsh. The ocean they drink from is full of salt — something that should harm them — yet they continue to flourish right where they are. If God allows these birds to thrive in such conditions, how much more is He watching over you? Even when life feels overwhelming or difficult to navigate, He is providing what you need to endure and grow.

EPISODE 13: Symbiosis | 16 Minutes
The ocean is full of fascinating partnerships—mutual help, one-sided benefit, and even harmful dependence. These relationships, called symbiosis, quietly remind us to look at our own connections with others. Scripture calls believers to a different kind of relationship—one marked by the fruit of the Spirit. We need to strive to produce fruit in our relationships. And how do we do that in a world shaped by human weakness? By relying entirely on the Spirit. When filled with the Spirit of Jesus, love, patience, and kindness naturally overflow. If these fruits shape our relationships, they will grow more mutual and life-giving. And even when love feels one-sided, keep showing Jesus. The fruit you bear may be exactly what softens another heart.

EPISODE 14: Grains of Sand | 11 Minutes
Sand is everywhere along the shore—countless tiny grains beneath our feet. As we pause to look closer, we’re reminded of Psalm 139:17–18 and the truth that God’s thoughts toward us outnumber them all. In this episode, we reflect on how easily we slip into thinking we know best, and how gently God invites us to trust His wisdom instead. The grains of sand become a simple, beautiful reminder of His sovereignty, His care, and His immeasurable thoughts over our lives.

EPISODE 15: Cast Your Cares | 8 Minutes
Ocean fishing brings its own thrill—strong fish, steady currents, and the satisfying moment when a line is cast out over the water. That same imagery reminds us of the invitation God gives His people: to release every burden, fear, and worry into His care. In this episode, the act of casting becomes a picture of letting go—trusting the Savior who willingly carries the weight we were never meant to hold. Join us as we reflect on the peace and freedom found when we cast our cares on Christ.

EPISODE 16: Sandcastles | 8 Minutes
Sandcastles are one of the simple joys of the beach—built with care, shaped with creativity, and admired for their beauty before the waves wash them away. As we pause to appreciate these fragile works of art, we’re reminded of something far greater: creation itself wasn’t formed by accident or chance. In this episode, we reflect on the God who designed the universe with purpose and intention. Nature points us to a Creator who not only crafted every grain of sand but also gave us His Word so we could know Him personally. Join us as we explore how even a sandcastle can lead our hearts back to the One who formed all things by His powerful Word.

EPISODE 17: Tides of Life | 13 minutes
Just as the ocean tides rise and fall, our lives move through seasons of joy and seasons of struggle. The low tides can feel long and heavy, but they are never the end of the story. In this episode of Devotions by the Sea, we reflect on God’s presence in every season and the hope we have that the tide will rise again—reminding us that God is faithful, even in the waiting.

EPISODE 18: Finding Peace at the Beach | 11 Minutes
The beach is often our go-to picture of peace—a place we dream of when stress feels overwhelming and life feels loud. We reflect on why life’s pressures seem to fade near the waves, yet return as soon as we step back into everyday responsibilities. Scripture reminds us that peace isn’t found in a place or an escape, but in Jesus Himself. His peace lives within us at all times—steady, present, and unshaken by our circumstances. Join us as we discover that true peace isn’t a destination, but a gift we already have in Christ.

EPISODE 19: Knowing Your Worth | 12 Minutes
Have you ever been amazed by the ocean—its depths, its hidden beauty, or even the quiet peace of standing on the shore? From coral reefs and mangroves to seashells and sunsets, creation reflects the care and creativity of our Intelligent Designer.
In this episode of Devotions by the Sea, we’re reminded that as breathtaking as creation is, God was not finished until He created mankind. Unlike anything else, we were made in His image—declared not just good, but very good. Join us as we reflect on the truth that our worth is not found in what we do, but in who we belong to. We are deeply loved, fully known, and held by an everlasting love that cannot be shaken (Jeremiah 31:3).

EPISODE 20: Wave Shock | 13 Minutes
Have you ever explored a rocky shoreline and noticed the life clinging to it? Beneath the crashing waves is a world God designed—small creatures perfectly equipped to survive constant impact. What seems fragile is often stronger than it looks.
In this episode we reflect on how the force of the ocean mirrors seasons of life when trials come one after another. When we feel overwhelmed and weak, God reminds us that He is our strength. Through His Word and through prayer, He renews us and helps us hold fast—even when the waves keep coming.

EPISODE 21: A Deceitful Enemy | 12 Minutes
Like many creatures in the ocean, our enemy survives by deception—lurking beneath the surface, disguising himself, and waiting to strike. From the very beginning, he has been a liar, a schemer, and a destroyer, using the same tactics he used in the garden. His goal has always been to deceive and devour.
But we are not defenseless. We have been given authority to overcome the serpent. Our response is clear and powerful: submit to God, resist the enemy, and draw near to Him. As we walk in obedience the lies lose their power—and the enemy is forced to flee.

EPISODE 22: God’s Mysterious Masterpiece | 10 Minutes
Have you ever been in awe of the ocean? Though it covers most of our planet, much of it remains unexplored, revealing a mysterious world filled with life beyond counting. Its depths remind us that God’s creativity and power far exceed what we can see or understand, calling us to pause and reflect on the beauty and mystery of His creation.

EPISODE 23: No-See-Ums | 10 Minutes
In today’s Devotions by the Sea episode, “No-see-ums,” we reflect on how life often doesn’t go as planned. Even in beautiful places, small frustrations remind us that something in this world is broken. When God created Adam and Eve, creation was perfect—free from pain, disease, and suffering. But when sin entered, everything changed, and all creation began to feel its effects. As Romans 8:22 reminds us, creation still groans, pointing us to God’s promise to one day restore what was lost. The “no seeums” of life remind us that this world is not our final home.

NEW EPISODE
EPISODE 24: Hermit Crabs | 11 Minutes
Even when a beach seems empty, life is everywhere. Hermit crabs quietly move along the sand, carrying only what they need and leaving behind what no longer serves them. Their simple way of living offers a reminder. It is easy to become consumed with temporary things and burdened by worries beyond control. But peace is found by releasing what weighs the heart down and focusing on what truly lasts.
